Sign Language 2.0
Well, it's time to start another genius hour! For these next eight or so weeks Maci and I will be learning sign language. We chose to do this for our project because it is something that we thought would be both interesting and fun. We actually came across this idea while on a livestock judging trip when one of the younger members was showing us all the signs she knew. We thought it was pretty cool and it is something that could be very handy so we though we would give it a try.
Our main goal for this genius hour is to learn enough sign language to communicate back and forth with each other. We are planning on learning small things, such as the alphabet, numbers, and animals, first. Then, we will work on putting it all together to form simple sentences. I have a feeling that our plan is not going to go exactly as planned just because we don't know how long it will take us to learn everything we want to. We may have to shuffle some things around or add topics but I think we will be able to adjust accordingly fairly easily.
So far, we have planned to use the internet as our primary source of information. Through a little preliminary searching, we found that it might not be as easy as we hoped, but we did manage to find a few helpful sites that were descriptive enough for us to understand. We also thought that books would be a good source if we could find some helpful ones. There are also a handful of people in the community that know sign language, so we thought we could pick their brains if we have questions about anything. This would also allow us to judge our success a little more accurately. We are excited to actually start learning things next week, so stay tuned to see how it goes!

Sign language can be very useful. If you ever need to translate for someone or meet someone having trouble communicating, even knowing a little can be helpful. I think more people should learn it; I don't necessarily mean be fluent, but even the alphabet is good to know. Do you have any previous knowledge of ASL or is it completely new to you?
